Women’s World Cup Soccer Finals

As we all well know, athletes do not always win. In fact, losing can give us more character than winning (or so “they” say). That said, though, everyone likes to win; second doesn’t cut it.

When winning is within a reasonable reach—and you lose—it is especially disappointing. I couldn’t help but feel so badly for Hope Solo, Abby Wambach and the rest of the Women’s National Soccer Team Sunday when they lost–with a number of incredible opportunities—to Japan. Sure, it’s nice when an underdog, particularly one whose country has suffered so incredibly this year, wins. But to have missed free kicks—including the net—that is particularly disappointing.

The US have amazing talent, charisma and heart, but in the end—when it came down to excel under extreme pressure—they could not succeed. The Japanese women beat them in mental conditioning. Congratulations to Japan, and I know you will return to the finals, USA!
